Thank you, Jeffrey! There are several more clips from Paul Simon interviews on YouTube where he breaks down how he composed his songs. Really fascinating to watch!

Nicole, great post! Acting out scenes to inform writing and dialogues into the way real things unfold. Defining a story by the time frame to keep plot-mobility. Cornering inspiration from many facets of experiences with Paul Simon really pulls this all together. Great key solutions for me to remember. Thank you so much for sharing. I will however be careful where I set bowls. Loved this post.

In reply to <a href="https://nicolebianchi.com/june-favorites/#comment-315242">John Di Carlo</a>.

Thank you so much for your kind words, John! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed reading this blog post as much as I enjoyed writing it. I will definitely put "The Power and the Glory" on my to-read list. Thanks for the recommendation. I loved the Perrotta advice too because I often find myself constraining my stories to a short timeline (for example, a few months, a week, or a single day), and I wondered if I should be challenging myself to write a story that spanned a longer period of time. But this quote made me realized that perhaps I'm like Perrotta and a short time frame might just be the style that works best for my stories. Glad to hear this will help you with your novel draft!

Nicole,
What a fantastic post. Far and away your best ever. To cover so much ground so intricately and so powerfully in such a short time frame us quite astounding. “”The Third Man” is a film I have seen at least ten times, so I can empathize with what you say. I have also read Greene’s novella and notes — very enlightening and refreshingly humble. The edition I read also included another story (the name of which I can’t recall) which Greene thought would make a better movie. If you’re looking for your next Greene story may I suggest “The Power and the Glory”?
I loved the story of the breaking bowl — so stunningly atmospheric it will stay with me (and enrich me!) forever. Perotta’s idea about the timeframe was enormously helpful too. Like him I am not built for sagas, and this insight has led me back into a novel draft I had almost abandoned. Sorry to write so much! (Assuming anyone has the stamina to read my comment — I’m not judging:))) And thanks again for making my entire weekend erupt like a firework display.
PS Dick Cavett and Paul Simon — what a gem of an interview!

Oh wow, that story of the porcelain ball shattering is SO cool! As a pianist, I'd probably react like the musician did, but use that as story inspiration cause I'm also a writer.

You should totally do more of these kind of posts in the future!
