I was a carpenter for years. Surface finishes, like siding and paint, improve appearances, but when the framing is wrong, a building will either collapse or never serve its purpose. Adjectives and adverbs are finishes, nouns and verbs are framing. Le Guin’s exercise is simple: write a paragraph using only nouns and verbs. The result is seldom elegant, but do the exercise often to give your writing the internal strength of a well-framed house.

Thank you for the wonderful tips. I’ve been struggling and struggling to write well and your article is great help for me. I will refer to them again and again if I’m stuck somewhere.
And I loved your story, “The Island”. Such a powerful narrative. I felt I was there among Anna’s neighbours! The story brought tears to my eyes as it evoked memories of my own Grandma, like a ‘long forgotten song’.
